Bibico is a clothing brand offering women’s clothes, such as dresses, cardigans, scarfs and belts. Bibico was founded by Spanish designer Nieves Ruiz Ramos who previously worked for big clothing brands, such as Zara, River Island and TopShop. Realising the negative social impact of the clothing industry, she decided to start her own company which combines style with social responsibility. Bibico clothes are hand-made by women who are members of cooperatives in India and Nepal belonging to the World Fair Trade Organization. The cooperatives are also SA 8000-certified which means that the workers are guaranteed a safe and dignified working environment in accordance with the key conventions of the International Labour Organization, as well as a living wage. Sadly, although the SA 8000 certification sets high welfare standards, their effective implementation is not guaranteed. Bibico also operates a social welfare programme offering work to the unemployed, including disabled people, single mothers and refugees.
