The German brand Frosch, having a frog in its logo, offers cleaning products with a reduced negative impact on the environment (e.g. on water ecosystems and on climate) as compared to their standard alternatives. The cleaning base of Frosch products are mostly natural plant and mineral ingredients – including baking soda – that are easily biodegradable. Some of the products are certified with Ecolabel, a European certificate which obliges manufacturers to meet environmental criteria that are stricter than the general EU regulations. Frosch products do not contain harmful chemicals such as phosphates, formaldehyde, PVC, halogen elements. However, some of them have an admixture of petroleum-derived substances and phosphonates. The packaging contains some recycled plastic. In addition, the Werner&Mertz group, the owner of the brand, is gradually reducing its carbon dioxide emissions (a reduction of about 40% between 2006 and 2012). The company’s buildings use geothermal energy, photovoltaic cells and small wind turbines. Moreover, Werner&Mertz is a member of the Rountable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a multi-stakeholder initiative with an objective to implement palm oil production methods that are more sustainable to people and environment (oil palm monocultures contribute to the deforestation of primeval forests). Palm oil is a base for many cleaning products. Werner&Mertz also spares no effort to ensure that labour standards are met at all stages of the supply chain.
