IKEA is a well-known Swedish manufacturer that produces, among other things, furniture and home equipment. Wood is one of the basic raw materials that IKEA uses therefore all wood sourced and used is in accordance with the IWAY forestry standard which means a ban on using wood from illegal logging operations. As you can read on the IKEA website, in 2020, 98% of the wood used by IKEA around the world came from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). IKEA creates products in such a way that they can be recycled. It creates new products from offcuts and leftovers. In addition to basic raw materials, IKEA also uses composite materials, a combination of wood and plastic. The use of wood fibers provides greater strength to plastic products and helps make use of waste. Roughly 1/3 of the plastic products offered come from renewable or recycled materials. IKEA also uses natural materials such as water hyacinth, cork, rattan and banana fibers, but this is a small fraction of production.

As of 2020, IKEA uses only renewable energy. Buildings are being altered and adapted to be more energy efficient. In addition, packaging is designed to be as small as possible to optimally fill a shipping pallet. Many products are sold in flat packs, which are easy to transport both for customers and from a logistics chain perspective. Packaging is made from renewable, recyclable raw materials. IKEA is incorporating the principles of a circular economy into its operations, and by 2030 has pledged that:customers and clients will be able to donate products they no longer use, the materials used will only come from recycled or renewable sources. A pilot project has been introduced in the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland to allow long term rental of furniture.

In addition, IKEA is involved in a number of social and environmental activities. It establishes cooperation with NGOs and institutions in need of financial support or furnishings. It has become very actively involved in aid activities in Ukraine. It plants flower meadows, builds hotels for bees, and you can find vegan and vegetarian dishes in IKEA restaurants.
