Himalaya is an Indian manufacturer of cosmetics and dietary supplements inspired by Ayurveda – traditional Indian medicine. In Bangalore, where the company is based, toothpastes, soaps, shampoos, creams, body balms and baby skin care products are manufactured. The products are based on plant ingredients, grown organically: without the use of artificial fertilizers and chemical plant protection products. Himalaya cooperates with Indian farmers, not only sourcing from them most the plant ingredients used, but also sharing with them know-how on natural plant farming. Himalaya has begun the process of official certification of the plant ingredients it uses but as for now only one line of its cosmetics is certified with the demanding Ecocert certificate. However, quite a few of Himalya products contain parabens, petroleum-derived mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate (a very stron washing substance) or silicones. Thus, it is advised to check the labels. The company minimizes its impact on the environment by trimming down the volume of packaging. It also reduces its carbon footprint by planting trees, using energy-saving lightbulbs and reflecting sunlight with shields on the warehouse roofs. In addition, Himalaya provides work for poor women farmers from the South of India due to it cooperation with a local NGO.
