The French brand Yves Rocher manufactures cosmetics based largely on plant ingredients. The plant material comes partly from controlled organic farming but only a small percentage of the products is certified with the demanding Ecocert certificate. The plants come from the company’s own farms in France and from other corners of the world. Palm oil used by Yves Rocher is sourced from farms controlled by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a multi-stakeholder initiative whose objective is the implementation of palm oil production methods that are more sustainable to people and the environment (oil palm monocultures contribute to the deforestation of primeval forests). However, some of the ingredients used in Yves Rocher’s cosmetics are synthetic substances, not particularly friendly to the environment and the skin, such as petroleum derivatives or silicones. On the other hand, no animal ingredients are used. Yves Rocher implements environmentally friendly solutions concerning the packaging, e.g. offering cream refills that allow for an 80% reduction of the amount of plastic used. Also, the company supports farmers from Madagascar, paying them a fair, living wage for working at farms growing aphloia, a species of shrub. The brand’s offer includes face, body and hair care products, cosmetics for children, make-up products and colognes.
