Marks & Spencer is a British manufacturer of clothes, cosmetics, food, interior accessories and many other articles. In 2007, the brand adopted Plan A – a list of 100 environmental and social goals to be met within the next 5 years. These included: waste reduction, increasing the share of Fair Trade products, carbon footprint reduction, sourcing wood from sustainable sources, and many other… The brand is also planning to increase the amount of organic and Fairtrade cotton clothes; for now, however, just a little over 3% of the cotton used comes from socially and environmentally sustainable sources. M&S is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a multi-stakeholder initiative with an objective to implement palm oil production methods that are more sustainable to people and environment (oil palm monocultures contribute to the deforestation of primeval forests). Palm oil forms a base for many cosmetics. Additionally, more than 80% of wood and wood-derived products are certified with FSC ensuring that the wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests. M&S is also carrying out pilot projects for implementing fair, living wages in 15 factories in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The initiative is to be expanded to other factories in the future. In Polish M&S shops you can buy clothes and cosmetics as well as food, including Fair Trade certified tea and coffee.
