Weleda is a Swiss brand with a history going back to the 1920s. Back then, however, its founders focused on developing the concept of natural pharmaceuticals. Today, the brand is mainly known for natural cosmetics. The plants forming the base of Weleda cosmetics are mostly grown according to the rules of biodynamic farming. Not only is the farming organic – no artificial fertilizers or pesticides are used – but also the rhythm of planting depends on the phase of the moon and the positions of the planets. Crop rotation is also applied. The Weleda products are certified with Demeter, a biodynamic farming certificate. Some of the products are also labelled with NaTrue – a new certificate that determines the minimum content of organic farming ingredients (one, two or three stars can be awarded – the more, the higher the content of eco-friendly raw materials). The cosmetics contain no synthetic dyes and aromatic substances, parabens, formaldehyde, silicones or GMO. The plant ingredients come from Ethiopia, New Caledonia an Uganda, among other places, where there are farmed with respect for high social standards. Weleda is a member of the Union for ethical biotrade – an organization complying with Fair Trade rules. The farmers, often organized in cooperatives, earn a higher than average pay and participate in biodynamic farming training. Weleda’s offer includes face, body and hair care products and natural oils.
